Composed and Arranged by Steve Wiest
Medium-tempo piece built around the very funky drums-n-bass groove. This ultra-hip groove (also known as breakbeat) grew out of the James Brown- influenced Rave scene and then morphed into a modern jazz offshoot. Commissioned by the University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Orchestra directed by Tim Ishii, Cooper Street is a tour de force of funky grooves mixed with a pastel interlude. Solo section for tenor sax and drums. Some mixed-meter throughout. Lead trumpet written up to a 4 ledger line written high G. Includes a strong ending that makes this a perfect set closer.
[Instrumentation: 5 saxes, 8 brass, 4 rhythm]
